COVID-Safe Community Thanksgiving

Provided by Safeway

Washington, DC—November 25, 2020—The coronavirus pandemic won’t stop our community celebration thanks to the 2020 Feast of Sharing meals donated by Safeway.

On Wednesday, November 25, at 11:00 am at the Family Ministry Center (3194-B Bladensburg Road, NE, Washington, DC 20018), member families will be receiving 370 Thanksgiving meal boxes containing a turkey sandwich, potato salad, an oatmeal cranberry cookie, an apple and a beverage. They will also receive free gift bags of warm winter accessories and PPE. The distribution takes place outside.

On Thursday, November 26, at 11:00 am in the shelter parking lot (65 Massachusetts Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20001), the Mission will distribute 150 Feast of Sharing meals and gift bags to people experiencing poverty or homelessness.

“On a typical Thanksgiving, the shelter opens its doors to the community for a free holiday meal, but because of the pandemic, the shelter must remain closed to non-residents. That’s why we’re so grateful to Safeway for donating these Feast of Sharing meals. We’ll be able to share some Thanksgiving turkey with our neighbors after all,” explained Mission President & CEO Joseph Mettimano. Local Safeway stores, the Safeway Foundation and the Albertsons Companies Foundation have contributed over $48,000 to Central Union Mission this year providing emergency relief for hungry families and children.

Please inform our community that Feast of Sharing meals will be available at 11:00 am at the shelter on Thanksgiving Day while they last. Family Ministry Center participants are available for interview and photographs on Wednesday, November 25, during the Feast of Sharing distribution. Media is invited to attend. RSVP requested. Please contact Rev. Deborah Chambers, VP, Development & Partnerships, at 202-534-9965 or dchambers@missiondc.org for information.
