Made at Local Safeway Stores

Washington, DC—September 28, 2020—Central Union Mission has been selected as a charity partner to receive donations from Safeway’s annual Nourishing Neighbors campaign to ensure every child has access to a healthy breakfast. All donations made at these four Washington, DC, Safeway stores—2845 Alabama Ave., SE; 490 L St., NW; 3830 Georgia Ave., NW; and 5545 Connecticut Ave., NW—will be used to provide nutritious food to the children who participate in the Family Ministry Center’s Relief & Restoration Program.

“Every child deserves a healthy start to their day,” said Mission President & CEO Joe Mettimano. “In the ever-changing face of poverty during the COVID-19 pandemic, fighting hunger is an imperative in our community, especially as we ramp up our services in preparation for predicted food price increases and additional housing loss for many. We are delighted to be the charity partner for these Safeway stores, and we thank Safeway Foundation for their dedication to ensuring that no child has to start their day hungry.”

Since the COVID-19 pandemic began in March, our Family Ministry Center has had a 50 percent increase in demand for food assistance from parents who have become unemployed or are facing eviction. The Family Ministry Center now serves 5,750 people each month and we are expecting that number to increase this fall. Safeway’s Nourishing Neighbors contribution will enable us to meet the expanding need.

Nourishing Neighbors, a charitable program of the Safeway Foundation, is working to eradicate childhood hunger in America. With one in seven children in America not knowing where their next meal will come from, the funds raised in September will be dedicated to local efforts that ensure every child has access to a healthy breakfast.

“Breakfast is an essential school supply for kids to learn, grow, and thrive,” said Jim Perkins, president of Safeway’s Mid-Atlantic Division. “It’s an honor to support the work of Central Union Mission. We are privileged to serve the community alongside organizations that work tirelessly to make our neighborhoods better places to live and work.”

Anyone wishing to support Central Union Mission through this program can go to one of the four Safeway stores until September 30 to make a donation at checkout to the Nourishing Neighbors program.
