Central Union Mission Launches Strategic Center to Tackle Growing Homelessness and Poverty Challenges in Washington
Washington, DC (June 5) — In response to growing numbers of individuals experiencing homelessness and the ongoing challenges of people living in poverty, Central Union Mission is officially launching their latest high-impact contribution to the Washington, DC, metropolitan area, the Comprehensive Family Resource Center (CFRC). An open house for news media will be held on June 6.
The CFRC is a full suite of critically needed services for families and individuals struggling to break the cycle of poverty, which has been compounded due to the financial devastation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. To help individuals and families on the path to independence, we now offer job training and placement, GED prep classes, computer training, social worker counseling, parenting classes, addiction recovery support, English as a Second Language classes, legal aid, assistance with housing placement, and periodic medical care. All of these services, in addition to food and clothing, are available at no cost to participants.
Citing DC Government’s recent report on the significant increase of homelessness in Washington, DC, Mission President & CEO Joe Mettimano said, “Central Union Mission has stepped up with interventions to not just meet the immediate needs of the poor, but to help keep people off the street permanently. Housing, alone, is not a silver bullet solution. It must be matched with strategic “wrap-around” services like those now offered at the CFRC to address the issues that continue to put and keep people in poverty.”
Tours of the CFRC are available on June 6 from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm during the Open House. Media is encouraged to attend and are welcome to sit in during the following classes:
  • 9:00 am – 10:15 am: Relief & Restoration program
  • 10:30 am – 12:00 pm: Bible Study
  • 10:30 am – 12:00 pm: Parenting Class
