“Men: Take Ten” to
Prevent Cancer

Washington, DC—September 29, 2018—Partnering with Howard University Cancer Center (HUCC), Central Union Mission is hosting a men’s health fair on Saturday, September 29, from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm at 65 Massachusetts Ave., NW. HUCC’s program, “Men: Take Ten,” provides free tests and screening for men who may not have access to any other health care.

At a 1:00 pm forum, HUCC staff will present information on men’s health and current clinical trials. After that, the Mission’s homeless guests are invited to participate in blood pressure, blood glucose, body mass index and mental health screenings, as well as prostate screenings at the mobile prostate check unit.

According to Mission Executive Director Joe Mettimano, “Screenings and preventative care are critical for successful health care, but they are often unattainable for people experiencing homelessness. We want to make sure our guests are aware of how to take control of their health. We are anticipating that we might even save some lives.”

Howard University volunteers will help men participate in these tests and provide them information on services such as health coverage, cancer awareness, nutrition, preventive care and smoking cessation. Other sponsors include Amerigroup and Howard University Hospital. The Mission appreciates these health partners for donating their time and knowledge to serve our community.

Media are invited to this forum and health fair. Please contact Deborah Chambers at 202-534-9965 cell or dchambers@missiondc.org to coordinate interviews with care recipients, volunteers and Mission staff.
