School Readiness Program

MISSION BACKPACK 2023

Remember going back to school as a child with all your new supplies and backpack, maybe even your Trapper Keeper! That excitement is what children all over Washington DC will be experiencing in just a few weeks, but some are not ready and need our help. Parents often cannot afford to purchase the supplies when forced to choose between new shoes for school or a new backpack.

Mission Backpack is Central Union Mission’s program designed to help low-income families have the needed supplies.  If you would like to help these children you can make and donate backpacks for the children of D.C.  There are four grade specific supply lists updated for 2022. These lists are curated to align with what’s required by District of Columbia Public Schools and to make sure every child has what they need.

The backpack groups are:

  • Kindergarten – 2nd Grade
  • 3rd – 5th Grades
  • 6th – 8th Grades
  • 9th – 12th Grades

If you would like more information about how you can help these children to learn and thrive in school by making and giving backpacks, You may download the list of items for each grade specific group: Click Here

Bibles are also welcome for children. We will make them available during distribution.
