Real Questions. Honest Answers.
When you support a mission, you deserve to know what you’re part of.
Here’s how your compassion meets real needs—and why it matters more than ever in the Washington, DC region.
How long have you been around?
Since 1884. We began by caring for Civil War veterans and have continued through every era since. We’ve served through wars, pandemics, and economic downturns, but our calling has never changed.
How is this different from other shelters?
We meet needs with more than food and shelter—we serve with the heart of Christ.
At Central Union Mission, we believe every person is made in God’s image. That means our work is deeply relational, dignifying, and personal. We walk with guests through crisis and toward purpose, providing spiritual support alongside practical tools for transformation.
Do you receive government funding?
No. We’re 100% privately funded by generous individuals, organizations, churches, and foundations. That gives us the freedom to offer biblically rooted care without restrictions—and to pray over every dollar we receive.
Is my gift tax-deductible?
Yes. We’re a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and you’ll get a receipt after every donation. (We always recommend talking with a tax advisor for specifics.)
Where does my donation go?
More than 80 cents of every dollar directly supports programs like meals, shelter, job training, and spiritual outreach. We take stewardship seriously.
Who do you serve?
Anyone in need.
Whether it’s a father recovering from addiction or a mom working to provide for her kids, we serve without judgment. If someone is hungry, homeless, or hurting, they’re welcome here.
Do I have to be Christian to receive help?
Not at all.
We serve anyone, regardless of their background or beliefs. While we offer Christian discipleship, no one is ever required to participate in order to receive care.
Can I volunteer?
Yes—and your time matters.
Volunteers are vital to everything we do. Whether you’re serving meals, teaching a class, or prepping care packages, you’ll be part of real change. Start here.
Can I donate items instead of money?
Absolutely.
We gratefully accept clothing, hygiene supplies, groceries, and household goods to directly serve our guests. Check out our current needs here
Do people really get out of homelessness through your programs?
Yes—and we have the stories to prove it.
Many men in our transformation programs go on to live independently with jobs, housing, and renewed purpose.
