Mission on the Move

MOVE Q & A

Why did Central Union Mission move?

Central Union Mission returned to the heart of the city. The District’s oldest social service agency began serving the poor in 1884. With the expansion of the Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority in the early ‘80s, the Mission was displaced from its location downtown through eminent domain and relocated to 1350 R Street, NW, right on the corner of 14th and R Streets. Recent efforts to revitalize the R Street neighborhood have forced many people in need out of the area. Dedicated to helping those often overlooked and neglected by society, Central Union Mission returned to the area in greatest need of a shelter for homeless people.

Where is the new Mission building?

Our new home is located at 65 Massachusetts Avenue, NW, just two blocks from Union Station. Central Union Mission is housed in the former Gales School Building, which is listed on the District’s Inventory of Historical Sites.

Where is the Mission’s administrative office?

Our administrative office is located at 2600 12th St., NE, Washington, DC 20018. Please visit us there during our business hours 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday.

Has this move affected services to poor and homeless individuals?

There was no interruption in service to people who were in need. Our food and clothing now take place at our Food PLUS Center (formerly Distribution Center) located at 3182-B Bladensburg Road, NE, Washington, DC 20018. People in need of food, housewares and clothing can get to the Food PLUS Center by driving or by taking the following Metro Buses: T18, B2, B9, and Bus 84. Please use WMATA Trip Planner for more details.
The Food PLUS Center is opened to the public Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call 202-529-0165, or send an email to foodplus@missiondc.org for more information.

Will people still be able to make donations of food and clothing?

Yes! Food and clothing donations can be dropped off at 65 Massachusetts Ave., NW. Because of limited space, we will not be able to take donations of furniture or equipment at that facility. We will, however, be able to accept donations of food, clothing, and furniture and equipment at our Food PLUS Center (formerly Distribution Center) 3182-B Bladensburg Road, NE, Washington, DC 20018.. The Food Plus Center is open to receive donations from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm Monday through Friday. You may call 202-529-0165 with any questions.

Three-quarters of our financing has been raised, and you are invited to help complete our building expenses of $15 million. We also have an array of Named Giving Opportunities for our new facility. Please consider buying a brick or a floor tile; we also need beds, chairs, and desks. All gifts will be recognized in a prominent area within our future home, serving as a lasting testament of your compassion for people in need. Learn more at Campaign for Compassion.
