WAVA Telethon an Exciting
Success

Ten Mission staff members heard compassion ringing in their ears as they manned the phones for the WAVA 105.1 FM Telethon on December 1. Generous local listeners contributed over $10,000 during this three-hour program. Thank you for helping!

A Champion of Change

Mission Executive Director David Treadwell was selected by the White House as a "Champion of Change" for his work at Central Union Mission. The Champions of Change program was created as a part of President Obama's Winning the Future initiative. Each week, a different issue is highlighted, and groups of Champions, ranging from educators to entrepreneurs to community leaders, are recognized for the work they are doing to better their communities.

"These individuals are innovators and reformers that are making a difference in communities across the nation," said Robert Velasco, II, Acting CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service. "We thank them for their commitment and commend them for setting an example for others to follow."

Mr. Treadwell will participate in a panel with nine other community leaders at the White House today. To watch this event live, visit www.whitehouse.gov/live at 9:30 am ET December 15th. More info...

Operation Christmas Miracle
Warms Hearts

Smiles big and small lit up the day as 600 children received bags of Christmas presents from generous Mission donors on Saturday, December 10. Nearly 20 volunteers from local churches helped with the logistics as families enjoyed music from a children's choir directed by Pat Brown, a Food Depot volunteer. Child Evangelism Fellowship volunteers shared candy canes and the story behind them, and Rev. Billy Staton from First Baptist Church of Glenarden brought an encouraging message. Santa made an appearance for a photo op, and his elves helped pass out candy to excited children. Thanks to you, these kids will have a joyous Christmas.

The Miracle is not over yet. Hispanic families with the Mission's Hispanic Family Ministries will enjoy their Operation Christmas Miracle this Saturday. The remaining bags will be delivered to other homeless shelters that serve children and families.
